There are different ways to make sodium sulfide in laboratories and factories, depending on purity, yield and purpose, and different types of sodium sulfide produced in factories have different USES. While the question "how does sodium sulfide form" is fundamental, it's challenging to answer it in the round.

Here is the content list

  • Formula Of Sodium Sulfide

  • Production Of Sodium Sulfide

  • Characterizes Of Sodium Sulfide

  • Ways To Preserve Sodium Sulfide

Formula Of Sodium Sulfide

Sodium sulfide is the chemical compound with the formula Na₂S, or more commonly its hydrate Na₂S·9H₂O. Both are colorless water-soluble salts that give strongly alkaline solutions. Sodium sulfide adopts the antifluorite structure, which means that the Na+ centers occupy sites of the fluoride in the CaF₂framework, and the larger S₂− occupy the sites for Ca₂+.

When exposed to moist air, sodium sulfide and its hydrates emit hydrogen sulfide, which smells like rotten eggs.

Our commercial samples are specified as low ferric sodium sulfide, whose characteristic is the content of Fe is lower than 0.0018ω/%,the solubility is lower than 0.025ω/%. Such technical grades of sodium sulfide have a yellow appearance owing to the presence of polysulfides. These grades of sodium sulfide are marketed as ' yellow flaky matter'. Although the solid is yellow, solutions of it are colorless. It is mainly used in medicine, top-grade paper, PPS plastic, leather, printing and dyeing, or dressing industry.

Production Of Sodium Sulfide

Industrially Na₂S is produced by carbothermic reduction of sodium sulfide often using coal:Na₂SO₄ + 2 C → Na₂S + 2 CO₂

In the laboratory, the salt can be prepared by reduction of sulfur with sodium in anhydrous ammonia, or by sodium in dry THF with a catalytic amount of naphthalene forming sodium naphthalenide:2Na + S → Na₂S

Characteristics Of Sodium Sulfide

Hydrogen sulfide can react with copper ions to form water-insoluble copper sulfide precipitates, which is the principle of removing copper with hydrogen sulfide in industry. But hydrogen sulfide is highly toxic, and once it leaks, it can easily cause poisoning or even death. The amount of hydrogen sulfide used to remove copper in industry is quite large, and it is quite dangerous whether it is transported or stored and used in the plant. After all, hydrogen sulfide is a gas, whether it's a compressed gas or a liquefied gas, it's dangerous.

Sodium sulfide breaks down in acid to produce hydrogen sulfide. It is deliquescent in air, produce oxidation action gradually at the same time, meet acid to produce hydrogen sulfide.

Sodium sulfide impacted or high heated will explode, it meets acid will release toxic hydrogen sulfide gas, anhydrous alkali sulfide flammable, heating it will emit toxic sulfur oxide smoke.

The product in the gastrointestinal tract can be decomposed hydrogen sulfide, oral hydrogen sulfide can cause poisoning. Sodium sulfide also has a corrosive effect on the skin and eyes.

Ways To Preserve Sodium Sulfide

Because the solid sodium sulfide in the air especially moisture absorption decomposition, it will be decomposed when heat, and sodium sulfide water solution is difficult to preserve, sodium sulfide configuration into a solution is particularly volatile, must be used at once, all of this contribute to difficult store of this material.

  • Solid sodium sulfide

Since the chemical properties of sodium sulfide solid products are not very stable, they should be stored in a dry, cool and light-proof place and in a vacuum environment if better conditions are available.

  • Liquid sodium sulfide

Because sodium sulfide solution is volatile, it cannot be made in contact with the air during preservation. Glyceride can be added to avoid reaction and deterioration, and then sealed with a glass instrument to preserve it. The preservation environment must be dry and a cool place to avoid light like solid sodium sulfide.

And here are some concrete proposals:

² Both solid and liquid sodium sulfide should be stored in a cool, ventilated store.

² Keep away from fire and heat.

² The humidity in the storage should not be more than 85%.

² The package should be sealed.

² Sodium sulfide should be stored separately from oxidants and acids, and mixed storage should be avoided by all means.

² Sodium sulfide should not be stored for a long time to avoid deterioration.

² Equipped with the corresponding varieties and quantities of fire equipment.

² The storage area shall be provided with suitable materials for leakage.

² Handling should be light loading and unloading, to prevent packaging and container damage.

The formation of sodium sulfide is no longer the right of medieval alchemists, but we still do not recommend that ordinary people prepare sodium sulfide by themselves, after all, it is a toxic chemical material.
